Knee pain and stiffness will interfere with your ability to mobilise adequately. Lack of mobility will impair normal daily function.
Examples of activities which may be affected are:
- Walking
- Kneeling
- Bending down
- Standing from the floor
- Climbing stairs
- Playing sport
- Sitting for extended periods
- Sleeping.
Your knees are required to function in the straight and bent positions so loss of movement in either direction will interfere with your activities of daily living.
Loss of extension (being unable to straighten the knee) usually does not cause much functional loss but can lead to pain at the front of the knee from overloading the kneecap.
Loss of flexion (being unable to bend the knee) can make it difficult to stand from a chair or from the ground without assistance.
